Are wooden sash windows energy efficient?

Are wooden sash windows energy efficient? Wooden sash windows can definitely be energy efficient.  A common misconception is that uPVC sash windows are more energy efficient, but this simply is not true.

How energy efficient windows are is predominately based on the type of glazing used and whether the sash windows are double glazed.  However, as timber is a naturally insulating material, high quality timber windows will provide better thermal efficiency than their plastic equivalents, helping protect you from cold winters.

During the summer months, double hung sash windows also provide better ventilation.  By opening both the top and bottom sashes, sash windows allow you to improve the circulation of air within your room, cooling down your property in the hot weather.

What type of window is most energy efficient?

The type of glazing used in your new windows will make the biggest difference to thermal performance, rather than the design of the window.

Double glazing is the best option to improve thermal efficiency.  But don’t just settle for any type of double glazing.  Double glazing has improved a lot since it was originally used in the 1970s.

Today, the best type of double glazing that you can get is glazing that uses low-E glass (low emissivity glass), which is specifically produced to improve energy efficiency.

Low-E glass has a clear, microscopic coating applied to the inner pane of glass.  This coating is designed to allow more light into the room, while also reflecting heat back into the home, helping improve energy efficiency and reducing heating costs.

Replacement, energy efficient timber windows

At The Sash Window Workshop, the majority of wooden windows that we manufacture and install are double glazed, meaning you can benefit from improved thermal efficiency while also preserving the traditional look and feel of your home.

When manufacturing our windows, we use low-E glass as standard, allowing you to benefit from the additional advantages from this specialist glass.

If we are also fitting the windows for you, we will draught proof them on installation, helping further improve energy efficiency.

We are proud to provide our customers with high quality, traditional wooden windows alongside excellent customer service, reflected by the fact that every year approximately half our orders come from previous customers or recommendations.  We are also Which?
