From CNC Machine to Finished Installation: The Journey of Bespoke Castellated Sash Windows

Handcrafted Sash Windows for a Period Home in North London

Every sash window we manufacture has its own journey, from the first CAD drawing to the final installation. These bespoke castellated sash windows were manufactured for a period home in North London, showcasing the journey from CNC-machined timber components through to glazing and final installation.

Designed to complement the character of the home, these replacement sash windows feature one particularly striking detail: a castellated head.

What Is a Castellated Sash Window?

A castellated sash window features a decorative stepped detail, often referred to as a crenellated or castellated head. Inspired by the battlements found on historic castles, this architectural feature became popular on period properties where decorative window detailing played an important role in the overall character of the façade. Today, castellated sash windows remain a distinctive choice for homeowners seeking to preserve or replicate traditional architectural features, while benefiting from modern window performance.

Architectural details such as castellated heads can play an important role in maintaining the historic character of traditional buildings, reflecting the principles promoted by Historic England for the conservation and sensitive repair of heritage properties.

The Journey

The process began in our workshop with precision CNC machine. Using detailed CAD designs, individual timber components were carefully cut to exact specifications, ensuring every part of the window would fit perfectly within the existing openings.

From there, our skilled joiners assembled each window by hand, shaping, finishing and preparing the frames and sashes through every stage of the manufacturing process. This combination of modern technology and traditional craftsmanship allows us to create bespoke sash windows that are both historically sympathetic and built to modern performance standards.

Designed to Match the Property’s Georgian Character

This project forms part of a five-window order, with new sash windows manufactured for several rooms throughout the property, including a bay window arrangement within the ground-floor living room.

To preserve the home’s original appearance, the windows were designed with a combination of 4-over-2, 3-over-2 and 2-over-2 glazing bar configurations. These patterns are commonly associated with Georgian and later period architecture, helping the new windows blend seamlessly with the character of the building.

As with all our bespoke joinery projects, every sash was individually manufactured to suit its specific opening, ensuring an authentic appearance and a precise fit.

From Joinery Workshop to Glazing Department

Once assembled, the windows progressed through our workshop and into the glazing department. Here, the glazing units were carefully installed before the windows underwent final preparation and quality checks.

Finished in a classic white paint finish and complemented with polished chrome ironmongery, the completed windows successfully balance traditional aesthetics with modern durability and performance.

Ready for Installation

With manufacturing complete, the windows are ready for installation by our experienced fitting team. While retaining the property’s existing frames where appropriate, the new bespoke sashes will provide improved performance, smooth operation and lasting reliability, all while preserving the architectural character of this North London home.

Projects like this demonstrate how traditional sash window design can be successfully combined with modern manufacturing techniques. From precision-cut timber components to beautifully finished windows ready for installation, every stage of the process reflects the care and craftsmanship that goes into creating bespoke timber sash windows.

Whether featuring standard detailing or distinctive architectural elements such as castellated heads, every window is handcrafted to suit the individual property it was made for.
