Meet the Production Team – Richard Musson, Senior Production Manager
At The Sash Window Workshop, our success is built on the skills, dedication and teamwork of our production team. In this feature, we’d like to introduce Richard Musson, our Senior Production Manager. Since joining the business in 2021, Richard has played a key role in developing our workshop, supporting our production team and helping maintain the high standards of craftsmanship for which we are known.
Richard’s Journey into Engineering
Richard joined The Sash Window Workshop in 2021, bringing with him a wealth of manufacturing and engineering experience. Before joining us, he worked at Xtrac, where he was involved in the production of high-specification gearboxes for the motorsport industry. Working in an environment where precision and quality were critical gave him valuable experience that continues to benefit his role today.
Richard’s engineering career began at the age of 16 when he started a mechanical engineering apprenticeship. A strong believer in the importance of apprenticeships and continuous learning, he balanced work alongside his studies and went on to achieve a BEng in Mechanical Engineering through distance learning with the University of Portsmouth. His combination of practical experience and technical knowledge has helped shape his approach to leadership and problem-solving throughout his career.
Supporting the Growth of The Sash Window Workshop
Richard joined the business during an exciting period of growth and investment. Following the acquisition of the neighbouring property, he played a key role in the redevelopment and modernisation of our workshop facilities. As part of a significant investment programme, he helped oversee the installation of a robotic paint spraying system, enabling greater consistency, efficiency and quality across our production processes.
The investment in our workshop has continued in recent years, with the addition of two CNC machines, a rip saw and a cross-cut saw. These improvements have increased capacity, streamlined workflows and supported the production team in delivering high-quality timber windows and doors for customers across London and Southern England.
Leading Our Production Team
As Senior Production Manager, Richard’s responsibilities extend well beyond the day-to-day running of the workshop. He oversees production, purchasing, stores, facilities management, stock control and materials, while also leading product research and development. In addition, he plays an important role in recruitment, staff retention and the ongoing development of the production team.
Richard is passionate about creating an environment where people can develop their skills and succeed. He works closely with colleagues across the workshop to identify opportunities for improvement, invest in training and ensure the team has the support and resources needed to perform at their best.
Investing in Innovation and Continuous Improvement
One of the aspects Richard enjoys most about his role is the variety it offers. No two days are ever the same, and he enjoys the challenge of finding new ways to improve processes, increase efficiency and support the continued growth of the business. Whether implementing new technology, refining production methods or helping team members develop their skills, Richard is always focused on continuous improvement.
His leadership helps ensure that quality remains at the heart of everything we do. As members of the British Woodworking Federation (BWF), we are committed to maintaining high standards across our products, processes and customer service, and Richard plays an important role in helping us achieve those standards every day.
The Importance of Teamwork When asked what he enjoys most about working at The Sash Window Workshop, Richard’s answer was simple:
“The people I work with. We have an amazing team, and I really value the contribution everyone makes to keeping the workshop running smoothly.”
His answer reflects the collaborative culture that exists throughout the business. Richard believes the success of the company is driven by the expertise, dedication and commitment of the production team, and he takes great pride in being part of a business where everyone works together towards the same goal of delivering exceptional products and service.
Life Outside the Workshop
Outside of work, Richard is married with two children, aged 13 and 11, and enjoys spending as much time with his family as possible. He has recently returned to coaching his son’s football team, something he finds both rewarding and enjoyable. When he’s not coaching, Richard enjoys walking his energetic Vizsla, gardening and running to keep fit.
Richard’s experience, leadership and commitment to continuous improvement have helped shape the development of our workshop and strengthen our production team. As The Sash Window Workshop continues to invest in its people, facilities and technology, Richard remains focused on ensuring we continue to deliver the outstanding timber windows and doors our customers expect.
We would like to thank Richard for his dedication, leadership and ongoing contribution to The Sash Window Workshop. His knowledge, passion and support continue to play an important role in the success of our production team and the future growth of the business.
