Financing your energy-efficient home improvements

With the colder winter weather kicking in, now is a good time to look at how you can improve the efficiency of your home.

There are currently a number of lenders in the market offering loans at advantageous rates that can be used to make improvements to the energy efficiency of your home.  For example, Nationwide has recently announced a new 0% fixed-rate additional borrowing mortgage for its existing mortgage customers to fund energy-efficient home improvements.  Many of these products can be used for replacing or upgrading your existing windows.

So why is it worth upgrading to double glazing?

Ultimately, upgrading your windows to double-glazing will help reduce your energy bills and lower your personal carbon footprint.

Double-glazing works by having a small gap between two panes of glass, which is normally filled with a gas like argon.  As argon is a poor heat conductor, heat loss is reduced.  Energy-efficient glazing will therefore create a more comfortable home, with fewer cold spots.  Double-glazing can also help insulate your home against external noise.

Any new windows should also be draught-proofed on installation.  This means that you shouldn’t get draughts coming from your windows.

Choosing energy-efficient glazing

However, not all double-glazed windows are equal.  It is important to choose the right type of double-glazing to achieve the most energy-efficient home.

Low-E glass will help improve energy efficiency as it has a thin coating of metal oxide on one of the internal glass surfaces, which reflects heat back into the home but still lets the light in from outside.

If you are looking for a window that is more energy-efficient than standard double glazing, FINEO glass may be a good option. FINEO is a vacuum-insulated glass that is just as efficient as triple glazing while being considerably thinner and lighter – making it more appropriate for period properties.

Like a growing number of products, windows have energy ratings – ask your salesperson for the energy rating of the window that they are quoting you for.  The better the rating, the more money you could save on your heating bills!
