What does your front door say about you?

Never judge a book by its cover. That’s what we’re taught at school over and over again. It’s nice advice, except that it doesn’t really work in the real world.

Every day we are forced to make hundreds of judgements about every area of our life. What we’re going to eat from a menu; which road to take to work; what film you’re going to watch when you get home – the list goes on and on. We have learned to make judgements based on many factors, including personal preference and appearance.

So when it comes to your home, first impressions do matter. You may have the most beautiful interior imaginable but if the exterior isn’t up to scratch, people will already have judged it before they step through the door. Which is why it pays to look after the outside of your home – and one of the key things you need to pay attention to is the front entrance door.

Our front doors reveal a lot about the people behind them. The choice of design style, material and colour all speak volumes about their owners.

The colour in particular can reveal a lot about the mood, feelings and emotions of those inside. Just as the eyes are the window into the soul, the front door is the window into the lives of those inside.

Think about your choice of colour carefully. Blue often signals a refuge or place of serenity. White reflects purity and harmony. Black means that the home is a centre of power. Orange can often reflect someone who is outgoing and optimistic.

Each colour reflects a different personality and reveals what kind of people live behind the door, according to psychologists.

Hardwood front doors are always a popular choice because they do everything a front door should. They are strong, tough and long lasting. They can also be painted in any colour you like. Use exterior wood paint and a couple of layers of primer and undercoat for a great finish that will last for years.

So, what does your wooden front door say about you?
