Considerations for specifying timber windows and doors

Security will always be an important consideration for windows and doors.  Windows and doors are often targeted by thieves looking to break into a property, but the right security can help not only prevent thieves from entering but also deter them from attempting to enter the property.

Part of the security will depend on the type of locks chosen for the property.  At The Sash Window Workshop, we offer a wide range of high-level security locks for new windows and doors.

PAS 24

PAS 24 is a security standard to assess whether a window or door can withstand an opportunistic intruder.  To meet PAS 24 requirements, the window or door will have had to have passed multiple assessed tests, including impact resistance tests, to ensure that it isn’t easy to break into.

It is worth noting that this needs to be specified as not all windows and doors will comply with this certification.

Part Q Building Regulations

Part Q Building Regulations or Document Q relates to the security of easily accessible doors and windows.  It is only required for new builds or buildings undergoing a change of use to become a residential home.

Not all windows and doors will comply with Document Q.  Listed buildings cannot be specified to meet Document Q, as listed building regulations will take precedence and are unlikely to be compatible with Document Q.
