Learn About Your Local History: Heritage Open Days 2017

Heritage Open Days celebrates the history and culture of England. The festival includes thousands of events, ranging from workshops to tours and is part of the European Heritage Days events.

The 2017 Heritage Open Days are taking place from Thursday 7th September until Sunday 10th September. 2017 is the 23rd anniversary of Heritage Open Days.

A summary of some of the events taking place across London and the South are listed below. Why not check what is happening in your area and learn more about the local history?

Cumberland Lodge – Windsor

Take a tour of Cumberland Lodge, built in the 17th Century, and discover its history and heritage. Open all day Saturday and Sunday. Tours run hourly and must be booked in advance.

Wokingham Town Hall

Open all day Sunday to view the history of the Grade II* listed building, originally used as a police station, and to ask questions to local historians. No booking is required.

Edes House – Chichester

The house is open on Thursday morning to view the restored Grade I listed property and the opportunity to win tickets to their official tour. No booking is required.

Georgian Guildford Guided Tour

An hour tour through the centre of Georgian Guildford on Friday afternoon. No booking is required.

Writtle a heritage of 10,000 years

A lecture to be held at Writtle University College by Gordon Ingram on 10,000 years of history and the influence the Romans had on Writtle. To be held on Thursday evening. Pre-booking is required due to limited capacity.

The House Mill – East London

The largest surviving tidal mill which was operational until 1941. Open Thursday until Sunday. Tours are available subject to demand and staff availability. No booking is required.

St Albans Guided Tour

Free themed tours covering different periods over Saturday and Sunday. The tours do not require booking, but have a maximum of 25 people per session.

The Sash Window Workshop

At The Sash Window Workshop we understand the importance of preserving a building’s heritage. Our repair service helps restore your existing windows and doors, retaining your home’s heritage.

For our replacement service, we can provide exact match timber windows helping to sympathetically restore your home. If your window frames are in a good condition, we can also replace the moving sashes in your window while retaining the original frames.
