Window Nightmares and How to Avoid Them

With Halloween around the corner, we look at how to ensure your windows don’t become things of nightmares.

Period Inappropriate Windows

Period inappropriate windows reduce the kerb appeal of the property and can scare off potential home buyers when you look to sell your property. With inappropriate windows drastically reducing the value of your property, how do you ensure your windows are period appropriate?

First, check whether the windows in your property are the original windows. If they are, when they need replacing you will need to find a specialist company with experience working with period properties that can replicate your existing windows.

If they aren’t the original windows, the next step is to check whether the windows are appropriate for the period of your property. If your home is a listed building or located within a conservation area, it may be a requirement that your home has period appropriate windows, and the local conservation officer may also be able to offer advice.

If not, try to find out when the property was originally built. If this information isn’t easily available, view our period property architecture timeline to try to match your home to the correct period.

Once you know the period of your property, a specialist window company should be able to work with you to design and manufacture period appropriate windows for your home.

Badly Repaired Windows

A badly repaired window can result in cost spiraling out of control. If you hire someone with little or no experience in restoring period windows, you run the risk of your windows being repaired to an inferior standard. Badly repaired windows can result in the value of your property dropping, and could result in you spending a lot of time, money and effort to fix the windows.

If the building is listed or in a conservation area, a badly repaired window could result in the local planning authority contacting you with regards to having unauthorised work done. This is due to listed buildings and conservation areas having strict rules on any work that changes the appearance or character of the property.

Windows Beyond Help

Are your windows the skeleton shells of what they used to be? If your windows are badly damaged, or rotten beyond repair, then they need to be replaced. Badly damaged or rotten windows not only reduce the value and aesthetic look of the property, but can also present a security risk as thieves can more easily force the window open.

To avoid your windows getting damaged beyond repair, you should ensure that they receive regular maintenance and painting. If period timber windows are refurbished on a regular basis they can last for hundreds of years before needing to be replaced.
