How to measure a window for a sash replacement quote

When looking to obtain a quote to replace timber sash windows, you may wish to obtain prices without requiring salesmen from several different companies visiting your property.

The simplest way to do this is to send across measurements and photos of your sash windows to the company for them to quote from. But unless you are an architect, or work in the construction industry, you may be unsure how to measure the windows to receive more accurate quotes.

As all traditional windows are bespoke, you will often find that even windows in the same property are made to slightly different sizes. This means that to obtain an accurate quote it is important to measure all the windows that you are looking to replace, rather than assuming they are the same size.

How to Measure the Window

When measuring the window, you need to measure from the top of the upper moving part of the window (the top sash) to the bottom part of the lower moving part of the window (the bottom sash) – see marking A.

You then need to measure the width of the window, measuring across the window to include the whole of the sash (the moving part of the window) – see marking B.

These are the two most important measurements when looking to obtain a quote for your new window.

However, the more information you can provide, the more accurate the quote will be.  Therefore measuring the dimensions of both the top sash (see marking G) and the bottom sash (see marking H), as well as the glass (see markings C and D) will also be useful to create a more accurate quotation.

Obtaining a Quote

From these measurements, along with pictures of your sash windows, a specialist timber window company should be able to provide you with a fairly accurate budget quotation to replace your windows.

Once you have accepted the budget quotation, a sales surveyor should visit your property to confirm your measurements prior to your order.
