Guildford Heritage Open Days – What will you learn?

Guildford is home to 39 Conservation Areas which span across many parts of the town and surrounding areas. And for those looking to get a deeper insight into the wealth of heritage in the area, a visit to a Heritage Open Day could prove to be just the ticket.

Taking place between September 11th and September 14th, Guildford’s Heritage Open Days give period home fans and history buffs alike the chance to learn about Guildford’s architecture and culture through a series of guided tours, activities, talks and exhibitions.

What’s on offer?

The four-day long event will offer visitors free admission to all properties, walks and events as well as getting the chance to peek inside historic buildings that are not usually open to the public.

This includes tours around listed buildings such as the Grade I listed Abbots Hospital. Still used for its original purpose this Jacobean Almshouse offers a wealth of period detail dating back to its 17th Century origins.

The programme of walks includes the 1.15 hour historic Guildford walk which explores 1000 years of history through the architecture and people of Guildford town.

How can I get involved?

While applications are closed for this year’s event period homeowners can open up their Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian properties for the public to enjoy.

Speaking about her experience of opening up her heritage home Sarah Hamilton said:

“I opened our Edwardian house for the first time four years ago and got hooked. Since then I managed to mobilise other properties in Paddock Wood to join me, including the Church of St Andrew, the Freemasons and Barsley’s Department Stores.”

Describing the transformative impact of the Heritage Open Days she went on to add : “Heritage Open Days has helped us forge new alliances locally, put Paddock Wood on the national map, and garner great media coverage. In 2011, our Heritage Open Days event was even featured on French television!”

If you own a period property in Guildford or surrounding areas, The Sash Window Workshop can help with many aspects of its renovation including installing replacement casement windows.
