Can timber windows be energy efficient?

In a short answer, yes. There is no reason why timber windows shouldn’t be energy efficient. Providing planning restrictions don’t prevent it, replacement timber sash windows and casement windows are normally double glazed as standard. A specialist window company should also draught proof any new windows you have installed.

If your windows don’t need replacing, you can also upgrade the existing windows by draught proofing and overhauling them.

Are timber windows likely to rot?

The likelihood of the timber rotting will depend on the type of timber used and how well the windows are maintained. There are numerous examples of timber windows that have lasted for over a hundred years, highlighting the potential longevity of timber windows.

At The Sash Window Workshop we recommend using AccoyaTM for new timber windows. AccoyaTM comes with a 50 year anti-rot guarantee, meaning that you do not have to worry about rotting windows.

Do timber windows require a lot of maintenance?

This will again depend of the type of timber used, as well as the finish and the location of the window. More exposed windows will require more maintenance. However, more sheltered windows can only need repainting every 8 years.

Are timber windows cost effective?

Unlike plastic or aluminium windows, timber windows can often be repaired if problems occur without requiring full replacement.

With the average lifespan of a plastic window being up to 35 years, compared to the average timber window using a modified timber, such as AccoyaTM, being up to 80 years (source) timber windows can actually be less expensive in the long-run.

If you live in a period property, buyers will often be prepared to pay more for a house with period appropriate windows meaning that you can add value to your home by choosing timber windows.

Are timber windows as secure?

The myth that timber windows are not as secure simply isn’t true. Security is predominately affected by the type of lock used on the window. Like different front door locks, some window locks will be more secure than others. Can timber windows be environmentally friendly?

Sustainably sourced timber windows are more environmentally friendly than plastic windows. Wood obtained from sustainable forests ensures that replacement trees are planted for any that are cut down.

For every wood window you install instead of a plastic window, you save around 160kgs of carbon dioxide (source: WWA). In addition to being non-biodegradable when no longer required, the manufacture of plastic windows is also more toxic than the manufacture of timber windows.

At The Sash Window Workshop we are FSC certified, meaning our customers can feel confident that the timber used in their windows are from sustainable forests.
