When looking to replace your timber windows and doors it is important to consider security.  Although replacement windows and doors in period homes do not need to comply with Part Q, it is still important to ensure that they are as secure as possible.

Window and Door Locks

There are a large variety of locking mechanisms. Depending upon the type of window or door, different types of locks will be available to you.  Common locks for Front doors include Banham and ERA Euro locks.  French doors and bi-fold doors have a large variety of locking options, including bolts at the top and/or bottom of the door.

Casement windows are generally more secure than sash windows as the lock is located within the frame, making it harder for someone to force it open.

At The Sash Window Workshop the locks in our standard range are chosen not only look beautiful but also to provide practical security for your home.  If you prefer we can fit locks that are not part of our standard range. However, please note that not all ironmongery will fit traditional windows and doors.

Safety and Security Glass

The type of glass can also make a difference to the security of windows and doors.

Safety glass can reduce the risk of accident by impact, fracture, shattering, or in a fire. Safety glass is a requirement for glass located in certain critical locations, deemed to be at risk from accidental human impact.  Different types of glass can be classified as safety glass.  These include toughened glass, laminated glass and certain types of wired glass.

In addition to safety glass benefits, security glass can also withstand a variety of deliberate attacks, such as vandalism and/or burglary.

Our sales surveyors will always recommend the most appropriate type of glass to suit your needs.

Wooden Frame

If you decide to go ahead with a quote to just replace the moving parts, check that the frame is still in a good condition.  If the frame is rotten, it won’t matter how high quality the window or door is, it may not be secure.

A specialist window and door company should check whether any part of the frame is rotten before providing you with a quotation.
