The Sash Window Workshop’s Longstanding Employees: Installation

As we conclude our series of blog articles speaking to some of our longstanding employees, as part of our 30-year anniversary celebrations, we meet with Attila and John to discuss working in our installation department.

Attila – Fitter

Attila has been working at The Sash Window Workshop for 16 years. Being an installer for The Sash Window Workshop was his first job in the UK, having previously been a carpenter for several years in Hungary.

What has been the biggest change in the company since you started?

The company has grown a lot since I started. I would estimate that we have probably over tripled in size!

The quality is probably the biggest change though. The Sash Window Workshop have always provided good quality products, but the last few years the quality has improved further with use of the latest machinery to allow for a more exact product.

How has your role changed over the years?

When I started at The Sash Window Workshop, I was predominately working on draught proofing, re-glazing, and repairing existing windows. Today, as our manufacturing capabilities have grown, there is less repair work and most of the work we do now is new joinery.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

A lot of things. It is challenging and offers variety; every window and door is slightly different and offers something new. The timing of the day also works well for me, I like starting early, getting to the workshop at around 6am, and then being able to finish earlier than most jobs allow for, at around 3pm.

John – Site Supervisor

John started working for the company in May 1996, when he worked as an installer. He was a carpenter by trade having previously worked in a building company and working on kitchens and shop fittings.

When he started the company was based in Ascot, with everyone working from multiple small sheds.  There were five people who worked in the office, including the Managing Director.

After working as an installer for several years, John became more office based becoming the site supervisor. He now visits where the installers are working, inspecting their work and helping to overcome any challenges that arise from working on traditional properties.

What has been the biggest change in the company since you started?

I would say the quality of the product. It has always been to a good standard but now we are able to provide a product that is to an even higher quality than before.  Customers expectations have also increased, with providing a high standard of finish being more important and it is important that we are able to provide this.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I really enjoy the challenge of problem solving– when there is a particularly tricky installation that I have to figure out a solution for so I can instruct the installers on how to overcome it. I also really enjoy passing on my knowledge to the newer generation of installers.
