Take a whistle-stop tour of any region in the UK and you are bound to come across a number of period properties boasting sash windows.

While many of these will be Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian family homes, there are also some breath-taking properties that have sash windows at their heart. Here are three of the best.

Stracathro Mansion House, Brechin

If it’s architectural splendour you’re after then look no further than this Palladian style 80-plus room detached mansion, home to artist Francis Convery. Currently on the market for £1.1 million with estate agency Strutt and Parker, this Grade I listed mansion acted as a backdrop for more than more than 150 of Convery’s paintings. Acting as masterpieces in their own right the property’s floor to ceiling sash and casement windows overlook a charming terrace.

Julia Willett, from Strutt & Parker’s Banchory office, said: “Stracathro House is one of the most beautiful properties we have ever marketed in this office.

“It is grand and elegant and everywhere you look there is something beautiful.”

Africa-inspired lodge, Bristol

Far away from the plains of the Sergenti lies this Africa-inspired lodge in Avon, home to couple Andrew Yarme and Jo Scofield. The freelance film sound recordist and producer and director of wildlife documentaries’ passion for exploring all four corners of the globe, in particular Africa, is bound to have played a part in their overhaul of unusual basement flat. Transforming it into a family home, the revamped property boasts a row of six sash windows in the master bedroom amongst its other impressive features. And when summer calls the family will be ready to greet the season with their separate garden lodge and spectacular wooden viewing platform.

British ambassador’s residence, Washington

While the British ambassador’s residence may not be on UK shores, there is no mistaking its quintessentially British architectural influences. Drawing parallels with the grand period property’s made famous by Downton Abbey monochrome chequered flooring, gilded furniture, chandeliers and of course six huge sash windows offering views over the lawn help to ensure that visitors to this property won’t forget it in a hurry.
