Designing and Decorating your Dream Bedroom

Decorating in the bedroom is notoriously tricky. Getting the right tone and feel for the room is a difficult skill. Remember that you want your bedroom to be warm and welcoming, but that it is also a place for relaxing and sleeping, as well as waking and starting the day. Therefore your bedroom space needs to be equally appealing late at night and early in the morning.

Comfort is key

Buy the biggest and most comfortable bed that the room will take, without compromising completely on space. Most of the time you’re in this room, you are asleep, so why skimp on the cost of a bed? A good bed is the very essence of comfortable bedroom.

Statement pieces

One way to transform a plain scheme from ordinary to effortlessly stylish in an instant is by adding a few bold ornate pieces. By keeping the colour scheme plain you will have more freedom to experiment with bold and beautiful statement pieces. For example, don’t be afraid to try a bold or pastel colour on gilt furniture.

Fabrics

Fabric is the main way to add character and style in the bedroom. Choose the right colour and fabric and you are half way to making your bedroom a sanctuary. Be creative and experimental, using fabrics to make a headboard and as throws on the bed.

Vary the texture of your chosen fabrics. Luxury carpets always feel nice under foot when you get up. A cold tile is very off putting if you have to get out of bed in the middle of the night.

Windows and Doors

Don’t just think about the walls and the floors; consider the ceilings, cupboards and timber windows too. Wooden casement windows, for example, will look great in a period themed room or a modern room with traditional elements.

If you are lucky enough to have a balcony coming off your bedroom, then timber French doors are a great way to let the outside world in. Having French doors that lead out on to it is another great way of including the space. This is ideal for a semi al fresco breakfast or post-work glass of wine.

Match the inside of the doors to the colour scheme of the room and they will also create a real eye-catching design feature. Decorate with drapes or blinds, depending on your design style and you can turn the doorway into a work of art in itself. With lots of stylish door accessories available, you can personalise the doors in your style.
