Knowing where to start is half the battle when it comes to redesigning the look and feel of our homes, and while we would all love to have our own personal interior designer on permanent standby, relying on our own design instincts is probably more realistic.

Much like the spray diagrams that provided fodder for our creativity when we were at school, mood boards provide the perfect jumping off point for overhauling our interiors. Here’s how you can create your own:

Getting started

Gathering wallpaper samples, swatches of fabric and cutting out any inspiring images from your stash of glossy magazines that evoke the style you want to create, as well as a large piece of A3 card, are all mood board essentials.

Creating your base

The base of your mood board should reflect the desired flooring you want in your home. Choose a piece of card that is a close match to your chosen colour, or if you want to go the extra mile you could paint the card using a sample pot of paint. However, it’s important to keep in mind that this colour may change once you put it on your wall.

If you are going to opt for wooden or laminate flooring, or even carpet, see if your local DIY store has any off-cuts that you could use on your mood board

Add contrast

Create contrast on your mood board with a colour that is a few tones away from your base colour. This could be in the form of a sample of patterned wallpaper that could eventually form an accent wall in your redesigned home.

Accessorise, Accessorise, Accessorise!

Liven up your mood board with accessories that fit with your decorating theme, which could be anything from eastern to vintage, or anything in between. Accessories can be anything from curtain ties to feathers and glass beading.

If you are considering redesigning your home, The Sash Window Workshop could help with many aspects, including refurbishing or replacing your timber Victorian doors with the highest quality, authentic solid timber doors.
