Highgate Tube Advert, North London

Highgate Station (N6), North London

The centre of Highgate still contains several Georgian shops, pubs, restaurants and residential streets. The neo-Georgian mansion Witanhurst, located on Highgate West Hill, was built in 1913 and is said to be the largest private house in London.

Highgate Hill, the steep street linking Archway and Highgate village, was the route of the first cable car to be built in Europe. It operated between 1884 and 1909.

The area has an active conservation body, the Highgate Society, to protect its character.

Putney Bridge Tube Advert, South West London

Putney Bridge Station (SW6), South West London

Putney Bridge station is situated on the Fulham side of the bridge. The bridge, which the station is named after, was originally built in 1642 roughly 500 yards downstream from the present bridge. The original bridge was the second bridge built across the Thames in London, after London Bridge, and was a wooden structure. The original bridge was demolished in 1886 when the current stone bridge was built.

Opposite the underground station is the estate of Fulham Palace. Part of the buildings of Fulham Palace are Grade I listed, while others Grade II*.

Other noteworthy buildings in Fulham include the Vineyard in Hurlingham Road which was originally built in the 17th Century, with later additions in the 19th Century. The Hurlingham Club was built in the 18th Century and is Grade II* listed. The New King's Road in Fulham also contains several 18th Century and early 19th Century residences.
