With yesterday marking the beginning of spring, and the clocks changing to go forward an hour this weekend, it is time to start planning for the warmer, summer months.

Check your timber windows and doors open properly

Although this year’s winter wasn’t as cold as previous winters, you may not have fully opened your windows or back doors for a few months.  It is therefore worth checking that they still open properly, and are not sticking.

If you have sash windows, check that the window remains open and doesn’t drop when you let go after opening it.  If the window drops when you open it, there will be a problem with either the weights or the sash cords.  Both of these problems can be fixed by a specialist who understands and has experience repairing traditional timber sash windows.

The hinges, handles, trickle vents and working parts on doors and casement windows can all become stuck over time.  Moving parts should be lightly oiling once a year to avoid sticking.  If they become damaged, they will need to be replaced.

Check the condition of the timber

Have a good look at the timber on your windows and doors, and check whether it is still in a good condition.  If cracks are starting to appear, or the wood is rotten, it is best to contact a specialist timber window company as soon as possible to fix the problem before it gets any worse.

Does the timber need repainting?  Over time the weather can take its toll on wood, and loss of paint is one of the first and most visible signs of age.  Traditional timber windows need to be regularly repainted to prevent the deterioration of the timber and to improve their appearance.  At The Sash Window Workshop, we recommend that timber windows and doors should be checked regularly and repainted when required.

If the paint on the wood is flaking, water can reach the underlying wood, leading to decay.  It is therefore important that the painted surfaces of your window are regularly inspected and maintained

Are the locks on your windows and doors secure?

Broken locks and latches, or even loose latch screws, can all result in making your home less secure and more attractive to burglars.  It is therefore important to regularly check the condition of your locks.

If the locks on your windows or doors are damaged and need replacing, check that any replacement locks you buy are appropriate for the type of window or door that you have.
