THE TIMBER WE USE
At the Sash Window Workshop we consider a number of key factors when deciding what timber to use for our new doors.
They are:
Durability - Durability is an essential quality
Straightness of the grain - Straight grained timbers are more stable
Texture (fine or coarse) - The finer the grain the easier to finish to a high standard
Availability - Supplies can vary
Sustainability - Wherever possible The Sash Window Workshop only use sustainable timbers
Cost - Purchasing timber on the basis of cost is almost always a false economy
With the points above firmly in mind we make our timber doors doors from Accoya™ or European Oak. These timbers are reasonably forgiving of any subsequent lack of maintenance or neglect and will last a lifetime and beyond. We believe that if you decide to replace your external door(s) you should only have to do it once.
The quality of the timber we use and our joinery construction methods are of paramount importance to the lifespan of your doors. We use the traditional mortice and tenon contruction techniques, identical to those that were used throughout the Georgian and Victorian periods.
New timber doors need to be re-painted, or even re-glazed over the years, but if the timber or joinery construction fail expensive replacement is likely. It is very important to use good quality timber.

THE STYLES WE OFFER
We can manufacture almost any type and style of new timber door you require. View our portfolio to see the types and styles we typically offer. Or view the technical specifications for our doors.

THE GLASS WE USE
One of our great strengths is our ability to offer bespoke glazing specifications to traditional timber doors, thereby providing solutions to a wide range of our customers problems. We source our glass from a wide range of suppliers, from those who are world leaders in glass manufacture such as Pilkington and St Gobain, through to small independent suppliers of very specialist products such as Gilbert & Mcarthy, manufacturers of specialist leaded lights and Philip Bradbury Glass, manufacturer of traditional and contemporary patterned glasses.
Our wide range of suppliers enables us to cater for a large range of applications and styles, such as patterned, obscure, safety and laminated glass.
At The Sash Window Workshop we ensure that our new timber doors play their part in minimising energy consumption. In an average house around 10% of heat is lost through doors. In a period property the heat loss from old and ill fitting doors will often be much worse around 20%. Our doors and the way that they are glazed cut heat loss and comply with the latest building regulations and BS EN1279 offering the very best in energy efficiency without compromising the character of your home.

THE STANDARD OF FINISH WE DELIVER
All our doors have at least three factory-applied coats of paint. These comprise basecoat primer, preservative, undercoat and a white semi gloss topcoat finish. We can also offer a large range of coloured paints, as well as bespoke plain and waxed hand coated finishes if required. The range of window furniture and security locks we offer is very extensive to suit every need and taste. View some examples.
